Attenna Quirk Jul 04, 2008
By Dr. Audio I have never written a review on Amazon but I felt this needed to be delt with. I had trouble with this tuner receiving both XM radio and HD radio.
I actually returned one unit in exchange for another and the problem continued. After listening to XM radio the tuner was unable to decode the HD signal. My phone calls to both XM radio and Onkyo were unrevealing and terribly unhelpful. Both companies hit a new low in providing useless information. After experimenting I found that my roof antenna was putting out TOO STRONG a signal and probably over loading the tuning circuits. I added a 3dB attenuator and the problem was solved.
The unit has excellent sound and makes the best of the compressed formats
on XM and HD radio. But beware, you antenna may actually be too good.
Another quirk is that you have to press a button to find out what is being played rather than the information appearing automatically.

Nice unit, but you will need to buy a separate XM or Sirius tuner May 20, 2008
By Charles Harris Platt Unit is very nice, looks great in the stack with my other equipment (NAD Amp & PreAmp and Denon SACD player), but please read carefully. It is Sirius and XM READY, meaning it does not have a built in tuner and you will need to buy a separate unit to get either one. Somewhat disappointing for the price and not very well documented here. Other than that I have no complaints and it seems to be a nice unit, but I would not have bought it if I had known it didn't have the tuner built in.

First Class Unit Sep 14, 2010
By RomeoDelta After replacing my old Onkyo receiver with a new Onkyo A-9555 amplifier and relegating the former to service with the TV that I hardly ever watch, I was in the market for a tuner. Having been a fan of Onkyo equipment for some time I naturally considered the T-4555 along with a number of other units from various manufacturers. After a couple of months of research I settled on the Onkyo and have absolutely no regrets.
Setup was a breeze and the performance has been top rate. I don't count myself as someone with super sensitive hearing but I rate this unit as good as any I have heard, although how much affect the actual tuner has on what comes out of the speakers is a matter for discussion. In my opinion the speakers are the major factor, which in my case are a pair of Polk LSi units.
Regardless, I was able to quickly program in my favorite stations, some of which are HD, and all of which come in loud and clear and have already given me hours of good listening.
While I was researching and reading reviews I did take note of one complaint concerning the up or down buttons for tuning, but personally I do not find this to be an issue. Now I have my stations programmed in I don't need to fiddle with the tuning. Not until I move to another city anyway.

Browsing channels is tedious and slow! Jun 06, 2009
By Gugelhupf A good tuner but browsing the radio spectrum is a push button affair. There is a button to decrease the frequency and one to increase it. This is so cheap! A tuner in this price range should have a rotary dial that allows quick channel surfing. (For instance, see the Marantz ST7001).

Onkyo T-4555 Tuner is garbage Mar 14, 2011
By Analog Only I bought the Onkyo T-4555 tuner (new) about nine months ago. I have Googled for
reviews on the tuner. However I haven't found a genuine breakdown and
performance review of the tuner. I looked for reviews before and after my
purchase and I still search weekly for new reviews.
I think it is very odd there are very few reviews about the Onkyo T-4555 Tuner
for use in the North American market with the HDRadio receiver card. There seem
to be a few reviews of the European model with DAB receiver card.
I bought the tuner based on Onkyo's quality of tuners built in the past.
What attracted me to this tuner was the built in HDRadio decoder. I live in a
market where 80% of the stations broadcast HDRadio.
The stations that have IBOC HDRadio tune in with very few problems.
The analog stations tune very poorly.
The first action I took was installing a low band-high band directional VHF
antenna with rotor on the roof of my house.
Analog stereo reception is poor.
From once an hour to several times a minute an analog station will go silent for
50 to 100 ms. If switch to mono an analog station will go silent for 500 to 3000
ms every few hours.
If I have the tuner on for a long time (more than 12 hours) tuned to the same
station when I tune to another station there is no sound. To correct this I have
to shut the power off and turn the tuner back on and tuning to other stations
works again.
Once in a while if I listen to an HDRadio station for a long time (more than 12
hours) when I tune to an analog only station the tuner will display the analog
station is tuned as an HDRadio station. To correct this problem I have to
disconnect the AC main from the receiver for ten seconds and plug it back in. Or
I can manually reset the tuner to factory default which erases all the stations
I have set in memory.
Now I imagine you're thinking why do I still have this tuner and why didn't I
try to have it repaired.
I did.
Onkyo replaced the tuner with a new one. (brand new - not refurbished)
That's good service. However the tuner they sent me was from the same build lot.
Build date the same. Serial number had couple different digits. So the new replacement has the same problems.
